“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”
LIES!…….well, at least if you’re anything like me. Being extremely sensitive, I have a history of allowing people’s word to make or break me, especially if they were from people that I am extremely close to.
But I can honestly say that the person whose words hurt me more than anyone else, made more of an impact than anyone else, stung like anyone else, were my own that I spoke to myself. It was like, no one could make me feel worse about myself than I could.
I would say things like, “I’ll never be able to do that” “I’ll ALWAYS struggle with this” “Maybe I’m not meant to get married” “I’ll never be able to sing like that, speak like that, lead like that”. And it became so normal to talk like that, that I actually began to believe it. Even though I had a TEAM of people around me that would proclaim otherwise. Now honestly, there was a separate insecurity issue there, but I’m certain that there have been times that you have felt inadequate, inferior, and even like you want to just quit altogether.
Now, I’m not talking to those of us who have made decisions that we know that we had no business making and now we are praying that God brings things together in the midst of our foolishness. Lol. That’s also, a separate issue.
But what about when you know you are in God’s will because you literally tried to avoid a certain area and it’s EXACTLY where He put you?
“The tongue is a fire, a world of evil. The tongue is among the parts of the body, defiling the whole body, and setting the course of nature on fire, and it is set on fire by hell.”
James 3:6 MEV
YIKES! That’s super intense. To think that the words that we speak have that much power. But, its the truth! As long as you think you can’t do it, say you can’t do it, aren’t good, enough, you won’t be. Period. You have the power over what you possess in your life by the words that you say, even if it may take a few thousands of times saying it over to yourself before you believe it.
And in case you were wondering what types of things you can say:
You are redeemed: “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes, who is risen, who is also at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities nor powers, neither things present nor things to come, neither height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:31-39 MEV
You are loved: “For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I gave Egypt for your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in your place. Since you were precious in My sight, you have been honorable, and I have loved you; therefore, I will give men for you, and people for your life.”
Isaiah 43:3-4 MEV
You are favored: “For whoever finds me finds life, and will obtain favor of the Lord;”
Proverbs 8:35 MEV
You are victorious: “I can do all things because of Christ who strengthens me.”
Philippians 4:13 MEV
You are covered: “We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
Romans 8:28 MEV
